Why Boston for the NEMF Spiritual Heritage Tour

May 19th – 21st 2026

Boston is a uniquely fitting setting for the New England Mission Foundation (NEMF) Spiritual Heritage Tour during the 250th anniversary of the United States, because it is here that America’s spiritual convictions, moral courage, and public faith converged to shape a nation.

Long before independence was declared, Boston was a city where deeply held beliefs about God, conscience, and liberty informed public life. Pastors, congregations, and ordinary citizens wrestled openly with questions of authority, justice, and obedience to God—conversations that helped lay the spiritual and moral groundwork for the American experiment.

As part of our tour, walking the Freedom Trail becomes more than a historical experience—it is a spiritual journey. Along this path, we encounter places where faith fueled action and conviction shaped courage. At the Old North Church, we reflect on how a church building became a beacon of hope and resolve. At the Paul Revere House, we consider how personal obedience and moral clarity can alter the course of history.

Boston also reminds us that the American Revolution was not only political—it was profoundly spiritual. Events such as the Boston Tea Party reflected a worldview shaped by Scripture, covenant theology, and a belief that liberty is a gift from God, not merely a grant from government. The sermons preached, prayers offered, and sacrifices made in this region reveal how faith informed resistance, perseverance, and hope.

During our May NEMF Spiritual Heritage Tour, we will intentionally slow down to listen to these stories—connecting Scripture, history, and present-day mission. As we trace the roots of America’s founding, we will also reflect on New England’s ongoing spiritual legacy and the continued call to faithful witness in this region today.

This tour is not simply about remembering the past. It is about renewing vision, deepening gratitude, and strengthening commitment to the work God continues to do in New England. At this pivotal anniversary moment, Boston invites us to stand where faith once shaped a nation—and to ask how God might use us to shape what comes next.
